Jim, I believe gillcrackers are more cold tolerant than pure redears. To what degree, I can't say. I catch them while ice fishing, but then again I catch pure redears the same way. There is such a thing as regional adaptation, where a given population of fish develops traits that appear different from the accepted norms. We see examples of this a lot here at BBG....Florida strain largemouth bass would do poorly in a northern state, or at least not develop to their full potential...the same with coppernose bluegills.

This same type of thing occurs on a smaller scale with our ponds and lakes. After multiple generations and many years, fish begin to acclimate to their surroundings. As far as redears and cold water go, they can survive if they can find that warmer water refuge. Most often this will be deep water during the winter, but they need to strike a balance between temperature and oxygen content.

Very nice fish! A 2 lb Redear that is 13" long is 125% above average healthy weight for a fish that length. Looks like a female, was she full of eggs?

Yessir! They are also the lowest in accumulate toxins - Did you know that?
Other fish, longer lived species, will build up heavy metals, PCBs, etc as they age.
But white perch swim in open waters and have relatively short life spans. This makes them one of the cleanest fish you can eat.

I've heard they make good cat bait - stands to reason. They and cats swim together.
70? Good times!

When in Rome, do as the Romans.
If whities are active in winter, wear em out! No limit and they are good eating.

I've heard winter is expected to be cooler than normal here, whatever that means.
