Tooty this is the sub species represented in that mount featured by Jeff Soto....a unique strain to a portion of Florida.....Cool looking gill!
Just saw this thread...The fish isn't a hybrid, Johnny - it's a substrain of bluegill native to Florida, the same way coppernose bluegill are a substrain native to Florida. The hand-painteds are limited mainly to the panhandle.
From the markings that is a cross between a South American cichlid called an oscar! These are released from tanks when people move. How do I know? I caught one last summer in my pond! My first exotic fish. This hybrid would be VERY VERY aggressive if I have my science right. Then again - who is a fan of hybrids?! : )
yes- that is a Direct Salute to Bruce's pure Gills - there is nothing like a pure bull bluegill!
