Isn’t it Tooty….hard to believe a freshwater fish can achieve this size….
SIMPLY INCREDIBLE !
Indeed Jim….I actually swam in this reservoir for many years when I was younger and I feel fortunate that I didn’t have a run in with a gator or a mammoth gar…..
That is some fish there.
It’s a monster for sure Tracy….but in Louisiana just like all species of bream….no size restrictions or daily possession limits….I’ve only caught one or two alligator gar in this part of northeast North Carolina, we mainly have longnose gar here and we catch several hundred every year without targeting them……while growing up in Louisiana, our family targeted alligator gar pretty often…..I still have the silver dollars I received with a 123 pound rod & reel catch back in the bicentennial year on a corn cob mullet….my fish was third overall that day…..
geez that thing is huge. i dont even try to fish for them here in TN. they are highly protected here.
How about that!
Here you go John….see below comment…
Indeed John….what folks will do in Louisiana with these large alligator gar is simple….they will chill the fish to coagulate the blood and firm up the edible flesh…..cut the rigid skin back from the flesh and use and ice cream scoop to take out balls of flesh to freeze and use in gravy or fry….they are surprisingly tasty…..This is an example of gar balls and gravy….
A lunker eating Fish !
