Those are some GREAT looking Gills man! In the dictionary next to Bluegill should be those fish!

Thanks, y'all! Frank...coppers are coppernose, or copperhead, bluegills, a southern sub-specie of bluegill. The scientific name is lepomis purpurescens, and it is believed to have evolved from Florida. In general, they grow quicker and larger than pure strain bluegills, but I don't think they top out as large as the world record fish from Ketona Lakes, which appear to have been pure strain fish.

If you look closely at the photo you will see a small copper-colored patch of scales slightly above and behind the eyes of these fish...hence, 'coppernose' bluegills.

This picture reminds me of how much I love that lake. I'm so glad you guys found the big ones on that trip. They are awesome. I am going to try to catch a 3+ this fall. You'll be the first to know.
