Nice fish and good report! I wish I had known about using the fly rod for carp 25 years ago. I lived in Denver and the S Platte has them in town. I used to fish right below the tailrace from Chatfield Res, the last foot hills res on the Platte, for stocker trout on my fly rod and I would take a spinning outfit and cast a dough ball into a likely pool while I worked the nearby eddies for trout. I was doing this one day and another fly fisherman happened along and we were telling lies comparing notes when my spinning outfit started bouncing around and I hauled in a decent carp. He looked at with great disdain and said he couldn't believe I was trying to catch carp on purpose. As I released it, I just shrugged my shoulders and asked "So, how many 5# plus fish have you released today?"...

This one took about 20 minutes to get in! So, the run down. I'm fishing this pool in a river and nothing is biting. I've seen carp in here before but never actually had a chance at them. I'm floating in my kayak in probably about 4ft of water, and I see a bubble trail coming up from a carp mudding on the bottom. I tie on a carp bitters fly and on my first cast towards the bubbles I get it caught in a tree. I try to break off but it pulls me right over the fish and it spooks, and I also lost my leader and fly. By the time I get re rigged, I floated a little upstream with some help from the wind and I noticed more bubbles. I got in range and cast it and let it sink. After a short time passed, I gave it a few twitches along the bottom, then I felt a little jolt and all hell broke loose. After about 20 minutes I managed to get the kayak to shallow water so I could get out and land the fish. I also happened to be by myself, and I have no solid stats, other than a carp fishing friend of mine's guess of upper 'teens in the weight category, and it was atleast as long as my whole net. I'll have to measure it. Caught on a 4wt with a carp bitters fly on 8lb test.

That, my friend, is a remarkable accomplishment on the fly rod!

Any stats and details of these great catches? The body shape of this fish is superb!
