Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Sorry the fish is not exactly on rule as he kept floppin about and I kept messin up the photos. I finally gave up and this is the best I could get of him before I released him alive to fight another day!!! He gave me quite the battle!

That ain't not Texas fish but still a great looking fish. I wonder why we don't see them down south. Is it due to water temp? Any one got an answer?

Davids remark is along the lines of my thinking.Red breasted Sunfish are more common than Longeared SF I believe in this area (upstate NY)

RBS have long ears as well and generally get bigger than LES I thought . My first thought on seeing the photo before reading the comments was RBS. Is it a possible PSXRBS? .

It may be some longear hybrid as you fellas have already mentioned. I'd also give consideration to a redbreast x bluegill hybrid. Big, beautiful fish!!

Hey Michael, that's a good thought too, as he was caught in an area where there's lots of bluegills and his face, jawline, and mouth looked very much like a Bull Gill, although he lacked the slate blue gill coloration like a pure strain Gill!!

what a beautiful sunfish. could be a pumpkin bluegill cross

Thanks everybody for the kind comments!! Hey Musky, I'm definitely considering a mount of this fish given its size and unusual coloring!! It is hard to see this aspect in the photo but he was a real slab and a very thick old fish; had to use both hands to even hold him!! Messed up a bunch of photos due to him floppin around--a real fighter!!! Maybe I (or someone else) can catch him again when he's a State record fish!!
