Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Caught about 12 Chubs in the creek today just to get the ball rolling. These make good live bait and are easy to catch when you need them.

I chunk up the big ones for jugs. Nice oily fish cats seem to likem. The small ones I put on whole hooked 2/3 of the way back , just behind the guts. They seem to struggle to get away from the jug and cause a lot commotion.

This time of year, I can catch a few Creek Chubs about that size at my favorite wade-fishing spot.  I've used one for bait, once.  Using a 3/0 circle hook, under a float, with the fish hooked through the eye sockets (but not the eyes).  It lasted about 10 seconds before a decent Hybrid Striped Bass grabbed it.

Along the coast of Spain, a usual bar snack was small "silver fish," deep fried in olive oil. The fishes were fried whole, and sprinkled with salt. They were always accompanied with bread for sopping up the oil and flagons of local wine.
You hold the tail in one hand and the head in the other... And bite out the middle. Pretty good really, all the guts and little bones just kinda melt together. All the wine helps, too!

You use these live / How do you rig them and what do you catch Keith? I use a chunk section of chubs or fathead minnows as bait for Brook Trout which love them .  I catch the bait and the Trout in the Ringwood Brook ,minutes from my home.

Some are twice this size. Have heard my dad talk of frying small bluegill whole and eating them bones and all. They didn't have much back then I guess.

Overgrown minnows!
People used to eat these, a century ago. Fried fast in hot oil, and salted as I recall.
But then, they USED to eat all kinda of things, didn't they? LOL!
