Hmmm , i dont get that happening to me . I had a slip float rod I lugged all the way out there yesterday but stuck with the fly rod for the Gills and one Bass .After the Bass I started throwing the Jointed Rapala.

gotcha... i guess that is a different style

whats amazing is the skill you got to catch em on top water... ive never been really good at it...

nowadays the most action i get on top water is my slip float being reeled in quickly and a bass slamming it. i swear im going to put just a treble on my slip float set up and cast and crank it in for these guys.

I tried quicker retrieves thinking to wake up a Pickerel but nothing; also with the shallow situation this was a  fine  technique to keep the hooks clean of subsurface  debris.

So "walk the dog " or 'Twitch and Pause " I kept it steady waking (like a jitterbug ) on top and snaking  the jointed back and paused  when they hit .First fish took at rest after hitting first . 2nd fish was more aggressive and took while it was moving .  "Wake and Snake " is what I ended up calling the technique I used because it describes exactly how the bait was moving and I'll remember it that way .

we started with the twitch and long pause with the longer non jointed models ... then we kinda walked the dog with this model.
