I have been pleseantly surprised with the size of blue gills that I have been finding under the ice. It could be where I am locating them but everyone I have caught this winter has been 8.5"-9.5" besides the big one pictured here. I would agree tho Jim, we have some really good quality panfish lakes up here.

Pelican lake should be on the "bucket List" for any blue gill fisherman.  I have talked with enough people who fish it to know that there are quite a few 10+ inchers lurking in those waters.  The Bemidji and Brainered lake areas should be a vacation destination as well for gillers. There are so many lakes in those areas that many of them get overlooked and as a result grow some bruiser Gills....:)

i think the pictures this winter prove there are huge gills in the north country.just wish illinois still did.the biggest sunfish i ever caught was in ely minnesota .i was about 14 and with a friends family.we were catching perch and i hooked some thing in the weeds that would not come out.it was literally the size of a plate.i had a picture but it must have got lost over the years.my friend and his extended family go to pelican lake minn every year for bluegills.

Slip, if you mean by "citation" that it is my best fish the answer is yes and no. It is the biggest Mn Gill I've ever caught but I've caught quite a few 10.75" fish in NC.....

It took a minute for me to put my hands on it. I just stared in wonder. I have caught 10.75" fish in NC before but none of them were this broad or heavy. It sent tingles up my spine!  Man I love Blue Gills! :)
