Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Michael Caserman caught this 4 pounds 13 ounces, Bluegill on Lake Havasu on June 6. The 16-inches fish was caught around 11 a.m. on McCoy fishing line using 12-pound test with bait. Caserman suggests Havasu anglers fish early in the morning or at night around dusk, around shallow embankments.

Hi Marisa! Rattle Trap is the brand name of a hard plastic crank bait that has great wobble when running, and steel ball bearings inside. They make a noise and vibration that fish can pick up on their sensitive lateral line, and they are a secret weapon of night fishermen in the south. Fish dive deep in the sun and heat, but the best feeding is shallow... so big hungry ones work a double shift and cruise the shallows after sundown, hunting. I tight line crickets on the bottom off of a dropper loop [hook above lead=greater feel for bites] and get some big ones... but I ALWAYS upgrade to a stronger hook than an Aberdeen for that, because catfish will home in on a cricket QUICK. Don't be surprised when a 20 lb cat stops for a single little cricket... but be ready! They'll straighten a wire hook. In clear water like that, I'd be eager to try the night! Fish get sunburns too, and I don't see a lot of shade... bet they go deep, and then work late, when the sun can't annoy them.

No Marisa, I think it's a Redear Sunfish.  There are some huge ones in Lake Havasu.  And the Lake Perris record Bluegill is 3 lbs 6 oz.

I Wanna Know What He Caught in On And Stuff So i'll Check It Out . @Mike :Yeahh i know ! The Water Is Always Clear In Havasu ! I Have Never Tried Night Fishing. My first reaction when I see something like that is that it's faked. With that out of the way - Holy Crapola! That is a behemoth.

It is hard to believe that a lepomis would live long enough to get that big. It has to be what, 7, maybe 8 years old to reach that size? But Havasu is a big piece of water...

DO we know any details about the catch? Bait, water conditions, etc.? Marisa is our girl on the scene - what have you found out?

WHOAH!!! That's an incredible fish!

I'll agree with the dawn and dusk approach. Prime feeding time! The water looks very clear... less light would make it harder for fish to spot the line... has anyone tried night fishing with little Rattle Trap lures? The BIG bream will feed at night, and a crank bait that wobbles well or makes noise would get their attention. If you use bait, be prepared to deal with bullheads or catfish... Careful of the sharp fins and the bitey end! Fry them, they're good!

I hope one these exist in lake Perris, I would love to catch it just for a picture!

Wow! With that vertical double barring on it's sides, it does look like kind of like a Bluegill. But to many people a Redear Sunfish is just a Bluegill. I did a search for this guy and his fish, but this is the only pic I could find. If I caught that fish, there would be all kinds of photos of it.
