Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Greg and I found Bluegills taking down the float outside the weedline and suspended 5 feet below the surface in 14 feet of water.

Thanks for your comment Jeff. Here is one that Brother Greg caught Years ago that looks to me like a Cuckold as well! 2078328914 (1440×810) (ning.com)

Afternoon John…..I’ve read about this phenomenon in sunfish and I heard similar things to what you described…..I’ve always thought that in a large colony of bluegill the largest males build the nests and take on the parental responsibilities for the eggs/fry…..where as the cuckold will get the females to lay more eggs but doesn’t protect them like the parental bluegill……as to your photo I can’t say if it is…….I’m not an expert in picking out a cuckold…..but it is very interesting….

Somewhere long ago , here on Big Bluegill I heard about the Cuckold. As I recall it was explained that some Male Gills use a small Ear Flap trait of a Hen to deceive other Male Gills and get a chance with Females. Do I understand this correctly, and is this photo not an example of a Cuckold?
