Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Another glass eye creation.
This is in keeping with a tendency towards sparseness. Most critters in the water upon which fish might feed don't have a zillion legs flapping around, or a body as big as Kirstie Allie. They are kinda trim, really, and that is what I'm reaching for here.

But I love those BIG eyes. I believe they are a strike trigger for fish. They also weight the fly in such a way that the hook point rides up... making the fly snag resistant. If nothing else, they add a cartoon-like character I enjoy.

And while most fly tiers might wrap on a hackle collar 'ol Shakespeare would approve of, I went here with a beard (aka "throat") of mallard flank fibers. I see them as simulating legs, or some other appendage.

Lastly, the head and eyes are filled in with hair dubbing - hair from our mangy dog, who got a haircut last night!

It's true... The possibilities are endless.
Thanks for looking.

Thanky, John.
I've managed to get them down on a #12 steamer hook, now. I expect that is about the practical limit for these. Smaller is likely doable, but I see little value in it for brim fishing.
Besides, too small and the bass, crappie*,and other fish might ignore it!

* I say crappie here, but that is wishful thinking on my part. Every crappie within miles ignores me; I haven't seen one in decades...

Thanks Mark and Bluto.
The hook will ride up, from the testing I've done, Mark. Another feature is this: the further back on the hook I place the eyes, the more the lure will tend to glide.
With the eyes forward, it tends to rise and dive. But mounted about 1/3 back along the shank from the hook eye, the weight of the glass beads gives a more horizontal slope to the descent. It takes very little line tension to make it "swim."

Hey, Carl - maybe the Bugabou will break my lifelong crappie losing streak!
Next, I'm working them down to size 12.

Crappie?! Oh, no.... crappie and I don't get along!
(Well, I have nothing against them - but they seem shun me with diabolical purpose.)

Hopefully, the gill and bass will like it though.
