Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Spent an Hour At My Grass Shrimp Lake.....Very Fruitful Today

A mix of fathead minnows.......this year's grass shrimp fry and tiny sunfish......dozens of grass shrimp in every scoop.....got about 500 aerating for upcoming trips......each is an opportunity to catch a fish....no matter how small they appear........

Fresh water shrimp are pretty ubiquitous, Aiken, from what I know.
We have them here, completely landlocked from the seas.
If shrimp are scarce, some similar critter is likely.
Have you tried netting among the weeds and rushes?

The pregnant females start growing the egg sacks in March and look like this right before deposit.......

Good idea on the smaller bottle Allen.....I've done the two liter and milk jugs before.....that would be perfect size for the bait bucket.......

I've caught a couple 'gills on live minnows, and several more 'gills, Longear Sunnies, Green Sunnies, etc., on the smallest minnow lure that Rebel makes.

What I would give to find some kind of shrimp in my home waters!  I've heard that the Red River (border of TX and OK) is actually kind of salty, and that sometimes you can catch mullet and shrimp below the dam on Lake Texhoma.  They come all the way the Atchfalaya (sp?) basin, and up the Red River.

Jeff, have you thought about cleaning out a 20 oz pop bottle, filling it with water, and freezing it?  I do that when I'm keeping live minnows at home in a bucket.  You would be able to take a "melted" bottle, put it back in the freezer, and reuse it.

Those look deadly Jeffrey. Your photos attest to that. I wish we had them here. Nothing but pure protein in a shell. Great for growing fat healthy fish of all species.

Little Sunfish are released and the grass shrimp are collected in a cold aerated bucket......they'll keep for weeks this way........they are very firm coming out of the cold water and great for hook threading.......I just drop a zip lock bag full of ice in before going fishing and we're all set.......
