  hmmmm the foam eyes might work to swim the fly just below the surface.i might try a foam version wrapping the body with razor foam.an emerger type bug

 I believe your way is better, the stick pin eyes work (I think the size I used were a little too big) but you have to cut the pins so short that they are hard to work with. This one was tied on a size 10.  I tied another using foam cylinder for eyes....this was easier to work with but since the foam is buoyant, I had to wrap some lead wire around the hook which just complicates the tie. I believe I will look for some glass beads the next time I am at the craft store (hobby-Lobby).............I like that pattern David, I think it will be a good one...........Don
