Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

WOW - these babies sure went crazy over the competition mix I used, a sweet attractant that the roach dig. You will be hard pressed to catch some massive roach like this ( a lot of people call them shiners or golden shiners).

So for someone looking to find these in there local waters what are some recommended spots to fish for these?

Should I look for a certain type of water, structure, cover, etc.?

I have caught these out of private ponds before fishing for GSF for bait (we can not fish this pond any more) but never had any luck catching them from a lake or public pond.

Thanks

Those are a top bait in my region. We catch them on 2 lb test and a # 16 hook with a tiny dough ball. Great for bass, pickerel, cats and stripers.

You bet! I am working on a new pond in my back yard and will be heading back to bring some with me.

Those would sure make some good pond stockes to get a nice population going.

I guess the answer is- I use them to gauge how few bass there are in a lake. I also use them to test my hookset speed. These fall of the hook easily too so I also use them to test how delicately I can land a fish. Most people would use them for Pike, but you would be hard pressed to find any this size in a bait store.

These are bass minnows when they are all growed up. See, bass anglers near the city take all the bass out. Then when they have fished and caught none, they dump their shiners in the water and then these grow up, spawn and there is no big predator fish to wallop them - well, then they become catchable fish - although these are the fastest strikes you have ever encountered.

In order to catch these, you must be fishing finesse. Size 16 with 1.5 lb. leader is how these were caught on a single spike.
