Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is a bag of chunky gold I caught downtown Chicago. While we don't have some species we ((used to)) have the best wild goldfish spot I have ever known.

When you say these are wild they have always been in the water.  Or after being released they have adapted to the water and now take on a new look compared to what most pet stores sell.

I have ready they will cross with the common carp as well so that could change the dynamics as well.  I have an old pond I have thought about letting a few of these go just to see if they would make it.

What did you catch them on?

Did you say they do not fight much?

where about downtown did you go about catching these goldies? I go to school downtown and during the school year my fishing takes a small decline due to lack of waters and overload of schoolwork

Oh Xeev- I might need directions they are one of my favorite fish to catch.
The fight the least of any fish known to man which is still alive.
As for edible I would never dare eat such a beautiful specimen but I am sure you could try. I don't know the structure of the fish, but I would say from the fight they put up- they lack muscle and the might be bony like bullhead.
Sorry I can't be more of help on the eating end- can someone else confirm eating goldfish? I would also recommend that you not just eat goldfish from the wild unless the water has other healthy fish. When lakes fish kill and some chemical has killed every single fish in the water, these bad boys are the last to die. I would be very careful eating from some waters for certain.

The wild fish have amazing colors. They live in very polluted waters where most fish perish. People use them for bait and they fall of the hook, heal, survive and reproduce. Members of the minnow family, they have large spawns two times a year. The juvenile fish is brown or gray as above. Some goldfish stay brown so they can blend in with their surroundings.
Once large predator fish are taken from water, they survive. Being bright orange, they are targets for fishing birds- but as noted, the brown and grey fair better in avoiding death from above.
