I use a Marlin 917 in the .17 Mach 2. I have had it 3 yrs. now and it is hands down the best squirrel gun I have ever used. My best shot ever, on a squirrel is with the 17. It was 132 yards to a squirrel on the ground. I was sitting on the ground using my home made shooting sticks and leaning my back against a tree for a rock solid shooting position.
Yesterday I was out scouting for deer season this coming weekend and I came across a band of squirrel feeding at the edge of a corn feild. I stood and watched for about ten minutes, then I tried about 4-5 blows (like a deer scenting you) and the hillside came alive with barking and I counted 13 different squirrels in the trees and on the ground withing 60 yards of where i was standing.
Wouldn't you now it, I didn't have permission for squirrel hunting, so I didn't have my gun with me.
Later last night I called the land owner and secured permission for late season squirrels.

What .22 do you use?
Do you have any hunting tactics that you care to share?
Thank you.

Make jigs out of that squirrel tail...Got a nice 18.5" Largemouth this year with a homemade SQTail 16thoz.jig...Mepps buys SQtails to tie into some of their spinners.I dont hunt but I've found them frozen dead in my woodpile and my friend Arty hunts them.He gives me the tails.
