Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Went and gave it a try despite blustery conditions and water that is still chilly at 51 degrees.....

Two things are almost certain when the gills hold shallow on the Albemarle of North Carolina......honey suckles Bloom and Pecan Trees bud.....it's better than a 95% accuracy in my opinion.

It is interesting how the different dynamics play a role Steve.........once temperatures maintain around 55 then I look for little spikes in coves and creeks that might jump up to the high 50s or maybe 60 and these areas will be the most productive in late Winter and early Spring.....once we sustain over 60 the big gills will shove shallow for that sustained season we all love......spawning in my region is May through August with several peaks along the way.........

Seems funny to me Jeffrey, you're talking about water warming up from 51 while I'm waiting for it to warm up from 64 degrees.  Maybe it's the amount of sunlight hitting the water in conjunction with the temps that set off the spawn.  I'd almost bet the first spawn will be happening at the same time around you as it does here.
