Good technique Slip.

The fish I saw on the sonar that day weren't suspended they were close to bottom .In that specific area I 've caught Crappie , Pickerel , Perch and Bass all on Shiners or Herring. Fishing a worm near bottom or casting with a spoon never worked in the 5 or 6 times I 've been there catching fish but has worked for Gills and Pickerel elsewhere on the lake . There are good Bluegills in this lake but I've never caught them at this spot .

John this is how i usually identify schools of fish marked on the sonar. Judging from your statement you have an LCD sonar with no GPS to mark waypoints. during the late fall such as this ive been marking waypoints over quantities of fish tightly schooled in the deeper basins. they could be baitballs or small schools of fish or jumbo or midsize bgills. this is a way to identify drop a tiny ice jig with a short ice rod right below your transducer and catch em. in my case i mark an electronic waypoint on my sonar if you dont have GPS throw a marker down and have a blast fishing around em. ive caught shad 3 inches long with this method... great way to identify.

No ,saw fish close to bottom but I suspect they weren't Gills but how am I supposed to know what species shows up on my LCD graph?

Thanks Steve ! Always nice for me to clear my head in some good air after playing music in a windowless bar like I did last night .

Nice pick, John.  It sure was a beautiful day in NJ, and I was stuck at work.  The weekend is near!
