Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

One of 23 I caught in just (barely) over an hour, the first dozen of which I caught on my first dozen casts. [Btw, you can see the Red Tag (my favorite pattern) sticking out of its mouth.]

Yes, I make my Red Tags (among the very few flies I actually tie myself).

Actually, they occasionally hit it on the sink, but mostly as I strip it in, using about a 2" strip every half second. Many times, they'll follow it for ten feet or more before they hit it, but, along the cement retaining wall next to one of the parks I like to fish, just as often they'll hit it as soon as it hits the water, like they're waiting for it, and I'm talking about - MAYBE - a quarter of a second after it hits.

If you're fly fishing, I wouldn't go smaller than a 3wt or larger than a 5. I use a 5 with a Wulff TT5F line, around 7ft knotless, tapered leader, and a 2 1/2 ft 4x tippet, with just about any wet fly or large nymph, with the Red Tag being my favorite (because it seems to be the favorite of the large gills). A TussleBug works well, also. If you're a Wooly Bugger fan, I'd tie some up in size 10.

If you prefer spinning rigs, I'd get a beetle spin, with no larger than 1/16 jig. As for the plastic to go on it, I've caught 'em on black&grey crickts, and just about any color crawdad (crayfish) or curly tail. Just make sure you let it fall - get it deep.

So do you make the Red Tag?

Do they hit this on top of the water or as it sinks?

What type of rig do you recommend to catch these gills?
