It was the first week of May, 2008. You can contact Cordell for which dates are best, I think he was catching a lot of Peacocks a month earlier, when they first started nesting, but you can catch 'em all summer long. Peacocks LOVE warm weather, and hit best during the middle of the day.
I fished for 2.5 days. I didn't get a lot of fish, but it was fun. I used a 5wt one day, and a 6 wt the next two days. I think I ended up with 9 peacocks, 2 oscars, 2 Mayans, and 3 Tilapia. You never know what you might catch down there. I also saw a LOT of other fish, especially peacocks, and also "jaguar guapote" (another cichlid), largemouth bass, redear sunfish, some other Tilapia species, and some saltwater jacks and small tarpon in the canals. I also scared a 5' long 'gator off the bank, and there were iguanas along some shorelines.

Wow his rates are really really reasonable for a full 8 hour day of fishing. About how many fish did you catch in a day. What time of year is this. What weight rode were you using

Those are some really cool pics.
Bluegill is to Mayan Cichlid as Dr. Jekyll is to Mr. Hyde. :-)

I'm estimating that oscar would weigh right around 2 lbs. They are a thick, stocky fish!
The peacocks were small. Mostly 15-inchers, up to about 17". Saw some bigger ones. They are BEAUTIFUL FISH! And strong!
I'll try to add some pictures or links to them.
Aounds like an amazing trip. Can we get the information on the guide? What kind of size were the peacock bass you were catching? how much did that oscar weigh?

I was fly-fishing some canals around Miami, Florida, earlier this year. A guide was putting me on some Peacock Bass, which were really fun! I also caught some Tilapia, and Mayan Cichlids. I ended up catching 2 Oscars, and they are STRONG FIGHTERS!! Total blast on a fly rod!!
