Yes the two on the left are females and the two on the right are males. The coloration is the best way to tell without cleaning them, males tend to have more color than the females in my pictures #12 and #13 are good pictures on the difference in the color.

Good questions:

First of all review THIS thread.

I believe the two fish on the right are males. They have the more typical male coloration, and greater surface area of the eartab, probably to the tune of 20% or more.

They're probably either sexually immature, caught out of cold water, or both, to account for the more subdued overall hue.

I could also be wrong, but my success rate when guessing before fileting the fish is running about 100%. It is definitely harder to tell by viewing pictures, so ya never know.

Just to make certain I'm looking at, and reading correctly, the right clues - did you base the genders off coloration and gill flap shape?
I tried looking at the enlarged pic to see any nape scaling, but couldn't get a clear view of those scales.
I'd also guess these fish came out of either stained water, or cold water based on the flushed colorations.(?)
That being said, I'm seeing four(4) females - two on the left coming from shallow water, the two on the right from deeper water.
Help, clarification, discussion?

Great pic Eric!
