Here's a male bluegill with an imposing helmet. Bluegills use this area to store extra available calories in the form of muscle mass. There's absolutely no truth to the fact that the hump is a place that bluegill store magical powers.

That is so true.
The helmet and breastplate of an angry mature male bluegill make him a formidable adversary.

Don't forget the breastplate on that fellow Bruce. Both are valuable protection when a big male BG battles with other males, nasty bass, or a fisherman.
