YW John!... UL setups with thin slick superlines casting tiny jigs has changed the way i fish the past few years.
Thank you for the info, I want to put together a UL combo that can cast light jigs like 1/64 oz. I see from the pictures you post, that you do quite well with your setups.
... welcome John to BBG!
i use rod, reel and line combinations measuring up to 7-0' long to produce the longest casts with tiny baits. the tiniest bait i am using right now is a 1/64 oz jig loaded with a tiny 1.5" swim jig plastic body i call the Lil Minnow.(manufacturer doesnt have a name for his tail). one of my favorite combinations going right now is a 5-6' shakespeare wild series UL spin rod matched with a Mitchell 310 or Shimano Sienna 50 series spinning reel... in my experiences longer rods have less control over the jig movement as well as less sensitivity. longer rods require heavier reels to balance and more arm strain during fishing sessions.
line is very important when putting a long casting jig system together. slick super-Lines such as Nanofil, Gliss and coated ice-braids significantly outcast the monos. super lines are more sensitiive also. i prefer the 8# GLISS... i lose a little casting distance but i like the strength in my pocket. i believe Gliss is the longest casting line on the market as of now.
i put together a 4-6' system together with a 50 series Sienna reel loaded with 8# GLISS to use in the kayak for Long-Casting as well as vertical jigging... i give up some casting distance but significantly gain in sensitivity.
Slip Sinker, Hello
I am a new member of Big Bluegill, I hope to learn more about catching Bluegill. I wonder if you would share what rod, reel and line you are using long casting the LiL Minnow? Thanks
