Nice catch .What was the water temp?
As a general rule, we never release females. However, the 3 largest females in this photo did get released. They were large enough, (9") that I simply couldn't bring myself to cull them, and we had all of the smaller ones we needed for dinner. I was on the fence about this decision, as never releasing a female is #1 on our list of rules, followed by never releasing any Bluegill less than 6".
It has been my experience that the females seem to move shallower, and begin feeding sooner than the males when the water starts to warm. We usually catch a higher ratio of females to males shortly after ice out, at least during a normal winter.
Nice catch, Tony! Have you thought about keeping all of the females as a no-cost way of management for this pond? It definitely has a lot of potential, that's for sure.
Good looking gills Tony, lots of hens........
