Comment by David Wester on May 2, 2013 at 8:17pm: Jeffrey- even with the cooler temps and rain, the bluegills are plentiful this spring. The fish seem to be larger this year also. Whereas I can keep a cooler of 8-10 inch fish and throw back everything smaller. The choice of colors or depth isn't even much of a factor this year. Although I am wearing out the mealworms. I keep a fresh worm on everything I put in the water regardless of the jig, spinner or fly. The fish have been caught anywhere from 1-8 ft of water. (on a side note, we were catching bluegills in open water in as much as 20ft of water at Santee Cooper. Deep water gills-that was new for me.) One key I have noticed this year is the importance of moving around. If I find a spot and catch 2-3 big fish then a few small ones in a row, I move locations. It seems that once the small fish are on to you, they are more aggressive and beat the larger fish to the bait. I repeat this process to 3-4 locations then go back to my original spot and start over. This seems to be my way of targeting the bigger bluegills. Also, I always work 2 poles. I toss one set of jigs under a float and cast another with a spinner or curly tail. This lets me cover 2 different areas and also tells me if the bigger fish want a floating/stationary bait or a moving one. Happy fishing everyone!
