Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hi, I'm new here.......been fishing UL fly rods 0 wt...2wt...and 3wt for several years. I haven't fished spin gear in so long, I am not sure where it is (I would have to go dig for it in the garage). The Copper-Head bream is my favorite fish. I have access to four ponds now that are loaded with them. The Red-Ear used to be my favorite, but the Copper-Heads put up just as good a fight, get really big and are easier to find. (they take top-water flies much more often too). Rob put me onto this site and it looks like a good one..............Don in SC   (anyone else in this group from SC ?? )

Hi Don,  Welcome aboard.   There are several of us here who use buggy whips for buggy fish.

As far as I am concerned.....there is NO other way to have as much fun while fishing..........My favorite rod is a Cabela's CZN 9'6" 4pcs 3wt. Distance and accuracy are outstanding (70' is easy when the wind isn't a factor). I fish a lot of clear water and you need at least 45-50' to get good results (especially with the big Gills). I can't wait for warmer temps /mid-April, early May/ to get the Gills back on the "feed"..........Don in SC

Donald, those are very nice gills! I also love fishing for bluegills. I have been using a couple 3wts most of the the time. I just ordered a TenkaraUSA rod and should get it next week. I am looking forward to using it on gills, etc.

Ralph, I have never tried a Tenkara rod. I am sure that will be fun with the gills..........I have never really considered one of those mainly because I fish a lot of "Gin-Clear" water and the bigger Gills seem to "spook" if I can't reach at least 45-50 feet out. Please post some pictures and comments on how well the Tenkara works for you...................Don in SC

Don, Tenkara may be just the thing for gin clear water. You aren't laying fly line out on the water to spook fish. Just place the fly where you want it and hold on. :) Hopefully I'll be doing that soon. :)
