Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Anyone else fishing 2wts or less for Bluegill/Bream/Bass???

I decided I wanted to go a little lighter on my Bluegill/Bream rod I've been fishing 3 and 4wts so Saturday I ordered a Echo Carbon 7'3" 2wt flyrod got a heck of a deal because the 2012 models are on sale! Normaly $169 rod I bought it for $90 Sweeeeet! I hope the UPS man makes it here before this weekend :) can't wait to try it out!

Hi I fish with 000 wt and 2 wt and other ul fly rods the 2 wt is a G Loomis whisper creek one of my favorites. Sleepy

would you mind some more details on the 000? I have been thinking about a 0. I do have some concerns about flyline availability. Do you use the 000 for gills? I bet it is a fun rig.

Hi the 000 wt is a sage TXL 7'10",  I was talking to a rep at a fly show he said they tested them catching bone fish to see how they would hold up, I told him i also have the  TXL 1 wt both great rods. I was catching 1 to 5 lb bass on the TFO G Looms signature 6' ul fly spin combo rod using a fly reel on it. I have alot of fun with the ul's Sleepy

I have used a TFO 6' 2wt for 3 or 4 years now and I just love it. I have recently bought a used fishing yak and I may need a longer rod and I was thinking about a 7 footer. This maybe just the rod and the price is fair. How long will they be on sale? Keep us posted on the rod and how you set it up.

Ray I found mine here but it looks like they only have 4 & 5wts left now? http://southholstonriverflyshop.com/shop/#!/~/product/category=1859...

May be some other places that have them on sale.

I also fish out of a kayak most of the time and at 7"3" this will be the shortest flyrod I've used most of mine are 8' 6" or 9' I'm curious to see how it works out.

I am looking forward to your report on the 7'3" out of the yak. I will do the same with my 6 footer.

Lee I bought a 2wt last year and simply love it. If you like to draw out the fight and don't mind the big arch in your rod like I you'll love it. I have had a hybrid stripper or 2 get on it. That's exciting when you watch your backer almost all peeled of. I haven't caught one with it yet but it is fun trying.

I have heard a lot of folks worry about killing fish on light rods. I call B,S.. I use a 6# tippet on mine and you can put a lot of pressure on a fish with 6#. You just need to fight more from the butt section of the rod and never hi-stick a large fish. It can break an expensive rod. I have caught a few smallmouth upwards of 3# on mine and I doubt it took much longer than 30 or40 seconds to bring them to hand. A 5wt rod will back cast some the small gills when taken on the surface. A 2wt will seldom do this but other than that I don't find a lot of difference. You just use the rod a little differently. The 2wt is a little less tiring to cast over a long day and I do find it a little more pleasurable to use. I saw a fella land a sizeable carp on a 3wt. It probably went 10 to 12# and it did take him 2 or 3 minutes. It was in a pond of about an acre or acre and 1/2 so it could not get into any current and run with it.

I agree with you Ray in my opinionas far as a catch and release fish's survivability it's far more important how you handle a fish once you land him than how long it takes to land him larger fish especially. If you can leave them in the water and get pics remove the hook and let them swim off on their own. If you have to remove them from the water support their body weight with both hands, lay them on clean wet measuring boards or whatever your laying them on, then get them back in the water ASAP less than a minute!

Factory rod a TFO 1/2 wt 5’0 three piece is a fun rod with a two weight line on a tiny BVK-0 reel
for Bluegill/Bream or any
Panfish ..a soft flexing fly rod is great sport when targeting these great little fighters ... Soft hackle flies
Are really effective on feeding panfish ..they give a pulsating motion under water which really entice the fish to attack them ...
Tight lines ..
Paul
Also fly fish with one weight lines, cortland clear creek WF1F and Orvis Gen 3 WF1 are still readily
Available and good lines .. I would like also to try 000 or 0 but they are difficult to find ....
BTW ......Ray is right the TFO 2 weight signature series is a really nice panfish rod use mine often ..
