Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I WENT TO BASS PRO SHOPS NEAR BATON ROUGE AND THE STORE IS NOT ONLY WELL STOCKED, IT IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE, AND EVERYONE IS FRIENDLY.

I BOUGHT 2 FLIES THAT WERE OVER $5 EACH, AND ONE OF THEM BUSTED OPEN WHEN I THREW IT (ACCIDENTALLY) INTO THE POWER LINE POLE. DUMB MISTAKE.

ANYWAY... I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO TIE JIGS FOR SACALAIT AND ALSO POPPERS FOR BREAM

Explore FAOL: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/

You'll find patterns for just about any species of fish in N.America (and most other places). And welcome to fly tying!
I started years ago tying my own flies and can tell you it is a great hobby. There is nothing better than having a fish take a fly that you tied. It will cost you a little to get into but not much. I purchased a small setup from Cabelas and have been adding to it. Now I keep my fishing buddy and myself in flies.
One place tostart learning to tie is on youtube. After seeing your question I looked over there and typed in "how to tie poppers", and got several good videos on popper patterns. You can find a "how to" on a lot of patterns there, mostly for trout anglers, but the blue gill won't let that bother them. Think I'll go back and see what they have on crappie jigs.
I saw one fly tying video on youtube. The guy must be a pro, he was going really fast.

Check These tying instructions this used to appear on P.B.S.
Yeah the start up kit is what I was thinking about. You can't invent stuff...need some basics like a kit offers.

Watching some of these guy tie flies...they are fast!

Tim, Here is a blog posted here on BBG from 2008, I think you will find it interesting. Should be a must read for anyone getting into tying their own flies!!!!!! This is a timeless post, just don't let it discourage you from Tying your Own!!!!!!

This has become really easy with the videos on the internet, plus if you find a good fly shop local, they have fly tying clinics and instructions available...go to one of these and just watch before purchasing equipment. You'll get a better idea of what you really want.
I suggest starting with foam spiders, as it's VERY easy, and you know they work! Then go to poppers, because they now make very good bodies that you just paint and add legs and such. Once you get familiar with what the tools do, start with some simple nymphs. You'll get hooked!
I jumped the gun and bought two kits...the Cabelas material kit for beginners and the White Creek bass kit from BPS. I also bought a good vise.

Fortunately, I have been able to use all three, well worth the money spent, and the little book that comes with the Cabelas kit was good for me to start off with.

I m still learning and I really enjoy tying flies. One member here on this forum is sending me some flies he tied and I am looking forward to trying to duplicate it. His work is excellent, I have seen pics and just looking forward to it.

thanks a lot for your advice. I am a bass fisherman mostly, and probably a pretty good one, and a good fly fisherman as well, but still so much to learn about both.
