Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I've pretty much used nothing but braid, for everything from Bluegill to Sturgeon, for the last 15 years. Granted, I'm sponsored by Western Filament, makers of the best braided line available ;)  > TUF-Line..... but even if I weren't sponsored, I'm so hooked on braid, I'd pay whatever I had to, to keep using using it.

I use 2/12 on my micro-lights, as it's thin enough to put about 200 yards on a 1000 series reel, + it's very well suited to a rod rated for 1-4, or 2-6 lb mono (with zero stretch, a soft, forgiving rod is a plus).

Of course my leaders can be anything from 4lb mono for Sunfish, up to 50 lb braid for Sturgeon.

Anyway, are you a braid fisherman ?

Just curious,

Fish

I picked up some 6/2 Fireline Fused Crystal today to try it out. Haven't spooled it up yet, but my first comment is to wonder who's 2 lb. line they think it's the same diameter as? My 4 lb. mono looks thinner to me.

Spool it up Jonathan.....your really gonna like this line. I'm also a big fan of the 4/1 crystal......probably the best line for spooning on all fronts.

The 6/2 has an actual break strength of close to 10 lbs, and has never failed me.

Will do. I also just got my first-ever baitcasting reel (Abu-Garcia Black Max) and put Fireline on that, too. Practiced a little tonight, but it's hard to do in the dark as a baitcast n00b :-)

I almost got a Shakespeare EZ-Cast but a guy who makes fishing instruction videos on Youtube (he gave me his card and I said "Hey, I know you from YouTube!) said it would be  trashed after a few decent bass and recommended the Black Max instead. Seems like a good reel so far.

I have been using Power Pro 1/8 for years on my ultralites and love it.  I use a 4lb. test leader but only because the line is so strong, it is easier to break the leader if I get hung up and I am not constantly cutting back the actual line when changing lures.  The actual breaking strength is probably 12 lbs. or more.  The 1 lb. diameter line casts like a rocket - much further than 4lb. Trilene Excel.  I tried Fireline 1/4 Crystal once but got too many wind knots although their regular 2/6 is a sweet line.  Beats mono hands down and I frankly don't understand why more people don't use these lines.  The cost is high initially but the line lasts forever although the color might fade which means nothing.  I have been using some of my lines for at least 5 years or more with no degradation and I fish alot.  I use 2/10 Power Pro in saltwater and have caught redfish up to 12 lbs. with no trouble.  I think some of these bass fisherman get the outrageous higher test lines and end up not liking them leading to giving these lines a bad rap but in the lower tests, they can't be beat.
