Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I fish almost exclusively with jigs or cut up nightcrawler.

Always done well with pieces of crawlers.

What are your guys favorite live bait?

Wax worms? Meal worms? crawlers? crickets?

In the areas I fish, where these guys are part of the food chain and present in great numbers......Grass Shrimp are amazing......I carry and fish crickets often as well but the best days I've ever had have come on grass shrimp......I've had 250 fish Bluegill days on Toledo Bend Reservoir on Grass Shrimp on the flats.....

hmm wow never tried them, a 250 fish day sounds pretty great though!

If you ever come across them Brandon you'll be rewarded.....the number was only significant to break the tie for me with crickets.....grass shrimp also provide QUALITY fish out of a particular area......They worked nicely for me today in 51 degree water....you have to aerate these guys like minnows to keep  alive so there is some maintenance unless you catch them where you fish......

Ill try to find them, I do all of my bluegill fishing in Arkansas and have no idea if there available there. Right now until I graduate I'm in Washington state and I know for a fact I can't get them here haha

Maggots get my vote..... trouble is, they're hard to get, (keep) in the summertime, so I usually switch to waxworms during the warmer months.

I have never used either, how easy are wax worms to keep in warm weather? Ill give both a try

Red wigglers here. They work well for me, and are easy to keep alive. Crickets are my second choice of favorite bait. Tony, where do you buy your maggots?  I have never seen them for sale around here.

I order them a thousand at a time Vince.... from here:http://www.jadabait.net/

They are real easy to keep alive in the summer, Brandon. I raise them as does some other members here. When going fishing, I carry a small styrofoam bait bucket, and put them in it with a little bedding. Do not keep them in the plastic tubs that that they come in when you buy them. The sun beating down on the plastic tub will cook them.

Oh okay! Great, ill give them a try. So you don't keep them in a cooler?

Thanks Tony. I am gonna go there now and check them out. I use to fish a lot of waxies through the ice many years ago, and fished them here in GA. for yellow perch and gills in the winter. I want to try some maggots now.
