good question Chuck;; talk to some locals in your area who fish for blue gill; see what they use.  some descent ; go to colors chartuse/black;;  chartuse; whites pinks  can get you started; its really a gamble as to what they will hit at any given time.   tipping your jigs and flies; with either crickets or worms can help increase your catches.  blue gills have small mouths; so think small as to the size fly or jig you intend to use.     hope this helps

You can not go wrong with orange

never fished with orange will have to try

Scuds turn orange when they die.  I've done some orange scuds and fished them from my fly rod, and have connected with them.

Orange scuds sounds interesting, got any pics by chance ??

They're not the best in the world, but that was almost 3 years ago.  Dick Tabbert does some better scuds, with both antennae and tail.

Your work looks fine to me and the gills probably think they look even better,Ive been think'n about trying to tie up some scuds to see how they'd work.

In Southern Illinois  the go to jig fishing with open face  (light to ultra-light) is Black body with a chartreuse tail.   Best early in the year when the bluegill are active.    When I have friends out who want to catch some fish for a fry and not big into fishing I set up with the Black /chartreuse jig.  Sometimes you have to cut the tail  half off  because of short hits.   My first choice is fly fishing with the bully spider in black with a red tail ( bully spider is not designed with a tail ).   Good Luck!

I sent Chuck these and a few other patterns to try out.  Hopefully they do good!

Allan;; these are almost like the ones you made me a couple years ago;; extremly deadly little thing ! blue gill never had a chance with these !!  Chuck;; your a lucky guy to get some of Allans work !!

Carl, these are EXACTLY like the ones I've made you, except that I used black ostrich herl for the body, where on yours I used white.

I sent some White/Chartreuse "Lil Buggers" (what I call these things) to Chuck as well.  I actually keep those in stock.  I'll be making another batch of 25 White/Chart Lil Buggers here VERY soon.

Allan;;  first ones you made for me; had a chartuse body;; same as the ones that were on that midwest outdoor tv show that showed you ties !!  LOL
