auger (drill) holes and measure. in a pond or small body of water i'll start where i think it is deepest and make as many holes as i can and try them all.
My dad taught me the basics when I was young and I started tying again about 5 yrs ago. You can pick up alot on youtube and there are alot of instructional sites out there.
I'm in Texas right now fly fishing for reds and specks.
I will chat with you if you ever catch me on the computer, I'm not on here a lot right now, as soon as the river closes oct 31st I will be on some in the evenings.
Dale I use a small ice fishing jig year round. I bait it with a spike and the action is usually nonstop! I fish them in all water temps, I don't imagine the water in none to warm when I go ice fishing!
I've had great success while using spoons when surface temps are from the upper 40's thru the low 80's....when water temps drop below the mid 40's, I switch to ice jigs under slip bobbers until ice-up.
Hey Dale...I like water temps from the mid 60's to the upper 70's for active, shallow feeding fish. However, I have done real well in mid- winter/open water scenarios with temps in the low 40's.
Right now we are catching them in water 25 ft.-40 ft. surface water temp. is 71, catching the fish on black or silver 1/32 oz jigs that sonny makes. We tip the jig with crickets.
I fish Mountain Island Lake, which is an impoundment of the Catawba River. I also fish two water reservoirs for the City of Monroe, North Carolina which I really like because they do not allow motorized boats on their lakes.
