Ice is receding and I'm gonna trying catching some fish tomorrow in a boat first time this year.I better dress warm if its like today, and I better fish slow.I rigged up a tandem crappie rig...we'll see if it works out!
when we get a little bit of warmer weather i will take off and we can hit the pond
they were sluggish to hit the other day, but the pond is litterally loaded.
i want to thin some of them out
we are going to transpant some and eat a bunch more, so bring a cooler

hello jim
fished a large pond today that i have not fished in years, nothing gargantuan but lots of really nice 9" gills
we kept about 20 all between 8 and 9.5 inches
could not believe the lnumber of really good fish we saw, i dont think this place has been fished much since i was there over 10 years ago. I litterally saw sever hundred fish in this size range today.
come on spring,
david
if you ever get up this way, give me a call fishing by oneself is not much fun

hello ;jim
actually the biggest came from a well fertilized farm pond(lots of cows) i have caught some monsters in deep creek too, none quite that large though. It used to be much better 10-15 years ago, before they put all the houses on public sewer. deep creek is great but if you hit it right savage river reservior is right there, ususally the bluegills there are mixed in with the perch. the only drawback there is that you must used very light line 4lb will get you many more bites, they are very finicky
hope to get up there soon, still any ice
thanks
david

Thanks very much for the great info!
I will be trying the wood section in the Northeast section of the Monksville Reservoir this year .Hope the Crappie are as ready and willin as I am.
All the best Jim!
Yeah there's still ice fishing going on up here, but I did lousy this past Thursday on Greenwood lake .I gotta question for you Jim.I want to target Crappies at ice out (Perch too of course) Do you do well in March or do you find that a tough Month like I do? If it's a warm March these Perch and Crappies will be in the shallows before the Month is out I believe but I think I 'm gonna have go to the ice fishin holes at ice out this year and maybe the shallows in early April.Just have to see what the weather and Fish decide.

Sounds good...i really got get off my home lake and fish other places...I've gotten too complacent .I'm just catching small guys...I wanna get into some gig fish.Man it was freezing last evening,I'll tell you!The wind got ridiculous!
Hi Jim, I love those "Big Snakes" and hope to stock them as a minor predator species in my Trophy Bluegill dream pond one day here in upstate New York (near Albany). They are incredible fighters as well as voracious predators and truly should work well as awesome "Bluegill Management Machines" geared toward raising the ultimate GILL!!!

Jim-
Looks like a very rainy sloppy forecast for tomorrow so I might be outta luck for ice fishin' Greenwood Lake.
Another question on those Rapala jigs.Which of the three hooks do the perch usually get hooked on? ...or does it vary.I'm wondrin' if I should bait the single hook by the head!

Jim -
Got a small rapala jiggin' lure (like in your perch photo)hooked up and ready to go on a 4lb. leader to 6 lb. test for my next jaunt to the ice.
Years ago I caught a perch on this lure but am not sure if it was tipped with a bait .Any tips on fishing these lures for me? I recall basically swimming it through the hole slowly from side to side.If I recall correctly a perch smacked it like it was pissed off.

Come over to West PA in May and I will show you where I caught the 15 inch W crappie.
Just talked to a friend of mine in MD who knows you. Lonny says hi. We are planning an April fishing trip.
