Hey Dick thanks for the kind welcome to Big Bluegill. Living in NJ I dont see many gills  over 6 or 7 inches so I enjoy seeing what a big Gill looks like and how much fun it is to fish for them. I still enjoy a few hours in pursuit of these great little fighters. Especially now that I have taught myself to  use a fly rod. thanks again for the welcome. John "the iceman" DiCosmo

Thanks for the reply. I have been an inactive member for a long time and glad to be back to the site. Was just looking for comments on whether the crappie are schooling up this fall around bridges, etc. in the Baltimore area reservoirs / rivers.

Thanks for the comments Dick, it would seem you are all over this site.  I can not read fast enough to absorb it all.  I hope I can rise to an appreciable level of BG management compared to you truly dedicated members!

Dick, I was looking around again today and realized I never thanked you for welcoming me to BBG.  I have spent quite a lot of time on here looking around and reading/learning and checking out how people fish.  I enjoy fishing for most any fish, but my favorite eater is big bluegills.  I love the way they fight and taste.  I have gravitated away from cane poles, spinning reels, ultra-light rigs and have moved over to crappie poles (12-14 foot) with a huge fly reel (Okuma 9/10) spooled with 250 # power pro line instead of fly line.  I still have one fly reel with fly line, but rarely use it.  I started fishing with an older guy who beats me hands down every time we go.  I adopted his fishing style and equipment and he isn't killing me as bad.

We also fish saltwater with this same rig, which is why we use the heavy line.  It casts almost as well as regular fly line and it will stand up to the 25-30 # red drum we catch in the marshes.  The big reel is very helpful when you are getting a bite and need to take up slack as it will pull over a foot of line per revolution and you can spin the spool and it will roll up the line until tight or you stop it.  These reels have great drags and are super fun to bring in the big gills, crappie, catfish, bass and the saltwater fish as well.

Thank you Mr. Tabbert for the warm welcome to the Big Bluegill. I have relocated from S E Michigan to the Douglas Lake area of Ten. so most of my previous experience has been fishing bluegills in all 4 seasons of Mich.  not to brag but I did quite well there. However the locals I have met here all fish bass,crappie,or strippers,which leaves room for me to target my favorite panfish Big Bluegill,a I hope to learn much here and thank you again for the welcome.
