My Name Is Marisa And Im A 13 Year Old Girl That Loves To Fish . My Dream As Silly As It May Seem To Some Is To Be Able To Buy A cheap Aluminum Boat That Has A Cheap Trollin Motor On It At This Age . I Like Fishing At The Docks But Two Weeks Ago I Saw A Person My Age With There Dad With A Small Aluminum Boat With A Trollin Motor And It Just Gave Me An Idea That I Think Im Able To Try To Do Something like That Too ! Its A Project im Working On But Still I Have No Supplies That I Need To Do This . Yeah we call it the Palmetto State... nothing can be finer than to be in Carolina!

Well, yes. As long is it doesn't sink, you're alright. That makes sense, right?

But the way the boat's hull is shaped determines how well it "handles" different waters. "V" hulled boats with rounded 'chines' (the lower side edges) cut through the water best and take swells better. Think about the way ocean-going ships are shaped. See what I mean?

On a large body of water, like Lake Havasu, you'll get the wind blowing or a lot of boats on a busy day - and find some pretty big swells and waves because of it, true?

V-hulled boats cut through this kind of water, better, as opposed to riding over the tops of the waves and swells. Flat bottom boats, by comparison, ride high on the swell and wave tops and give you a rougher, more "tossed around" kind of ride.

Yeah Im pretty old! ;-) But I used to be your age, too. It can be hard convincing people you can be trusted at that age... that's what people always want to know. Remember that.

So start with something small like cleaning houses, washing cars for people, dog walking.... stuff like that. Most people want to help a young person when they think they are trying to improve and work for themselves.

Sure! Sunfishes of all kinds are scrappy fish and put up a good fight. Some of the worlds record sunfish have been caught in South Carolina, too. Big red ears and shellcrackers!

 

Whats the hobby You Get Your Money From ?

Some years, back I got into scale model and R/C airplanes. So far, those have paid me back almost enough money in re-selling to start looking for a boat. The metal detector I'm selling next should put me over the edge.

 

Wait, You've Been To Havasu Before ?!

Yes. I used to live in both Arizona and Southern California. I never spent a lot of time there, but I remember it.

 

How Much Are The 'V' Boats, If You Know ?

That depends on how many there are - its like Keith says, "supply and demand." Have you ever heard of that phrase? What it means is that were there are a lot of them, they will cost less. When no one has one, the price can climb. Usually, though, the V-hulls are a bit more because it takes more work to make them. If I were to guess, Id think a reliable, used one might go as high as $750-$1,000.

Jon boats tend to be less, though, and can be had in teen-girl sizes. V-hulls don't normally go under 12 feet, whereas jon boats can be had in 10' lengths.

 

Now here's another thought for you. I know Lake Havasu has a large sailing flotilla - sail boats, in other words. The big sail-boat sailors use a small service boat, called a "dinghy," to go back and forth to the boat when it is moored. There might be a few used dinghies hanging around Havasu. They're usually similar to a jon boat, so you want to stay off the big, open water with them. But they could get you in to the pockets of water where the bluegill are, and would be the perfect, manageable size for a teenage girl. Check into that.

I live in West TN. We have alot of water around . Lakes,rivers, ponds and bottoms. People use boats for fishing and hunting and recreation. There are a lot of boats and equipment around. A few years ago I bought a 13 foot Boston Whaler with a galvinized trailer 250 dollars. Its supply and demand I guess.

Okay, you're funny. No, dont sell your room empty!

John boats are really shallow draft, with a wide, flat bottom. This means they float in only about 4" of water and are quite stable. They are good at getting into small rivers, shallow backwaters, swamps and places like that. This is good for South Carolina where I live.

The downside is they ride high on swells, and dont cut through the water, very well. So large waters like Lake Havasu can mean a rough ride in a john boat, especially when the wind or traffic swells are running high. For that you need boat with a "V" bow and some soft edges on the sides. That pic of your Dream Boat is exactly right. It is the right compromise for larger lakes, where you may also get into the shallow edge waters.

I'm 53 years old. I always spend the same hobby money, from one past time to another. I just sell off most of one, to pay for the next. So just keep working. Do you have any part time jobs, something like, that to help earn money?

@Melissa - I do NOT have a boat, currently. I used to use my dads boats, but he got rid of them  a few years ago. I am in the middle of saving money to buy a small john boat of my own. I'm selling everything I can from other hobbies Ive had over the years to fund a boat. Model planes, guitars, metal detectors... you name it, I'm selling it. 

I know you may not have a lot of things to sell at 13 years old. But my point is to persevere and do what you must to realize your dream. You'll get there.
