Welcome to the Fiberglass Flyrodders! To the best of my knowledge, Fenwick never cataloged a 6'6" glass fly rod. But that doesn't mean they didn't build one to special order for Bob. If the right person asked Jim Green he would custom design a rod. For instance, I have a very nice FF83, an 8'6", 4 weight glass rod that was built as a special for the members of the Golden Gate Casting Club. The FF83 never appeared in a Fenwick catalog.

From Bob's description of the Feralite ferrule, he probably met Jim Green after 1962 when the ferrule was patented. More likely than not, the rod he ordered was built with a Feralite ferrule. However, if Bob is looking for another one just like it, he is probably out of luck. The closest he will come from the used market is a 6 foot, 5 weight FF60 or a 7 foot, 5/6 weight FF70. Both of these are nice rods.

By the way, DON Green founded and owned Grizzly, the company that made blanks for Fenwick. JIM Green was working for Sevenstrand when they bought Fenwick. Jim Green continued with Fenwick after the Clock family purchased both companies. Jim Green was the rod design master and Don Green was the rod production master. They later teamed up to create Sage Rods in the late 70s. "

Here is our first reply from the fiberglass Gods.

"Fenwick didn't make, to my knowledge a 6' 6" rod, but they made a couple lovely 6' rods - for the time period potentially in question (1959-ish) it was likely an FF60, 6' for a five weight. Of course Jimmy Green founded Grizzly, which was then sold to Fenwick. If the rod predates Fenwick then we'd have to go to "The Book" to determine if there are any hints of a 6' 6" rod under the Grizzly banner.

As to locating one, there is a newer model FF605 which comes up on this board and on the auction site from time to time. Expect to pay $100 to $200 depending on condition and other interest. The FF60 is a bit more rare, but it can be had. The Grizzly rods are extremely rare and finding one of the model you're searching for could take a while. OTOH, if you do find the Grizzly, you might get it for less than the Fenwicks as they aren't as well known and feature metal ferrules.

I just read this:

"Jim Green was constantly improving the tapers and sometimes drove the factory nuts with his frequent changes. Line weights also depended on whether the FF85 was two piece or three. In my opinion, the 3 piece FF85 for 6-7-8 lines, was one of the best casting Fenwicks ever made. Jim made casting the whole 90' of line look easy with that rod. There is an old Fenwick casting movie in which Jim is shown in slow motion casting about 60' of line with an effortless compact stroke as the line rolls out smoothly in a perfect flat loop - as beautiful as casting ever gets - using an FF85."

We need to find you that old Fenwick. Fenwick rods are readily available cheap - sometimes for less than $50 on Ebay.

Most of these rods are ready for the water too! They are not meant to be hung on the wall or locked in a case.

Think hard about what you had. Try to remember when you got it....maybe the year you got it? Anything else about it....number of pieces, line weight rating....anything.

The history of Fenwick and it's catalog is completely recorded and there is a good chance we can find it, or at least identify it.

Jimmy Green was a real stud. I have been reading about him since you posted....you are very kucky to meet one of the greats.

I have an FF85 and use it exclusively for river smallies. Don't know what I would do without it.
