I was wondering what kind of bird this is John? Around here lots of folks call em "SHY POKES" and eat em I think.

It kind of looks like one of those Sand Hill cranes from out west and they love to eat them out there too !!!!!!

yeah right ,ok ,I'll be good .

Unfortunately, yes.  The way the law is worded, even possession, regardless of how you acquired the feather, is illegal.

Really Allen?  if I find a feather on the bank I cant take it home and tie it into a jig !

Comment by Allen Morgan on July 17, 2013 at 2:33pm

John, don't do it!

I have since learned about a rather complex law in this country regarding bird feathers.  If the bird is a Migratory Bird (most birds), and does NOT have webbed feet, the feathers are ILLEGAL to possess, sell, trade, and/or use.  The exceptions are "upland game birds" like Pheasants, Quail, Grouse, etc., and a Coot, which is a duck-like bird that does not have webbed feet.  Invasive, non-native species like English house sparrows and Starlings are fair game; in fact, in some states, those are considered "kill on sight".

You got me looking out for the Heron Feathers now Allen!

The low-head dam I usually fish will have about 10 Great Blue Herons staged in spots trying to catch fish.  Also probably double that number of White Egrets.  I will see Seagulls in-season, and even White Pelicans and Bald Eagles in Winter.

Now that I'm tying flies, I would LOVE to get some of the feathers from a Great Blue Heron or an Egret.  I think I have a Heron feather in my hand yesterday, about 6" long, bottom half was downy, the upper half looked like it would probably have made a great HUGE soft hackle.

I've watched one of thesetry to eat a probably 2-3 lb catfish for about 30 minutes, and it couldn't figure those fins out. It was pretty cool
