Well I do both but prefer the Jigging rods .Sometimes I don't bring out the tip ups but a nice sized fish on a big shiner with a tipup is great imo.  There's a great In-Fisherman video of Stange sitting by two holes and Perch Fishing .He has one rod resting over a bucket dead sticked while he works a jig in a hole right next to it . I want to employ that one -two punch if I get some ice .

got one tip up.... just really not into hand lining .... i like the bend of the rod.

ht makes a tip up that holds an ice rod... looks good. Cabelas has them too. might pick one of them up and give it a try

i might just break out that tip up and harvest a couple slot pike... just way to many of them around here.

You're all set . No tipups ?Just jigging? Hope I can get some safe ice soon . I usually walk out to my spot from where I park but occasionally use a sled if its a far walk or I want to cover more area .I have six  lakes to chose from usually . My brother Greg and I built some sleds years ago . Greg's design and he did most of the work I was a mere witness.

yep ... a sled is necessary. got that baby loaded

  • 2 buckets
  • rod case with 4 rods
  • auger
  • spud
  • soft side tackle box
  • depth sounder
  • one man shelter (sometimes)
  • food/water

Do you have a sled for your gear Slip? Easier to pull around the power auger than carry .

I wanted to take it out on the lake tomorrow... so i wanted to get familiar with starting and stopping. starts on the first or second pull love it!. i was concerned about the weight of the unit at first ... sitting dry at 33#... not the heaviest unit. not the lightest by far. after doing much research their is a compromise between too light and too heavy. weight helps drill the hole more efficiently. then it becomes more difficult to lug around. Unit cuts like a hot poker thru butter. this unit will be great asset to my arsenal. some days last year i was only cutting one hole with the manual auger before my arm gave out... now i can cut dozens with no problem.
