Ok, I was hoping to go to one specific picture.  Instead, it went to the general search.  Probably even better.

Over on the right side you'll see some statistics.  They claim the Alligator Snapper will go over 200 lbs.  OK, I'll believe that.  They claim the life-span is 50 - 70 years.  I doubt that.  More like 150.  They will lay on the bottom, mouths open, and twitch a little fleshy, wormy-looking "lure" on their tongue to attract fish.  Once a fish enters the gator snapper's mouth, CLANG!  The trap shuts and the fish is eaten.

Try this:

https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=alligator+snapping+turtle+pic...

The "ridges" and points on their shells are more pronounced.  The spikes on their skin are bigger.  These things get HUGE!  150 lbs!

They are a Southern species.  Won't find them this far north, thank goodness!

I hooked a huge snapping Turtle fishing from a boat about 8 years ago .I was trolling a Crank bait for Bass . It was a very strange sensation feeling this creature on the end of the line .He was hooked in the hard beak and as I got him ,with his moss covered shell, to the boat I noticed he was flailing his front legs and claws like he was trying to dislodge the hooks from his mouth . I was amazed at the sight and recall uttering out loud to myself ,"this guy knows what he is doing "and will dislodge that hook .Three times i dropped the rod tip and gave him slack for a moment to assist him to do what he wanted .After the third time doing this I raised him again to the surface and noticed the poor creature had the hook in one of his front paws .Not caring to lose vital body parts by going anywhere near his face I took the oar and ran it down the line to the lure and with one quick hard poke set him free and got my lure back which I still have .I even recall which one of my 20 or so fishing rods I have was the one used .
