Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

In my local area, these work good on the bluegill.

They are just #10 sized variants on the "Crazy Charlie" theme. With such sparse dressing, the bead chain eyes flip these things right on their belly... And the hook rides up like a jig.

I drag them along the bottom, kicking up a trail of dust. Or, Inlet them "swim" on the big wing.

Super simple to tie, give em a try.

Dry or wet fly hook
Bead chain eyes
Squirrel, fox, raccoon hair
Dubbing of choice.

Orange is a good color, as is black, olive or white.
I've added a Krinkle Holo tail to one of these, and Krystal Flash, marabou, hair all have been used as tails.
One has NO tail and NO dubbed body... and hat works, also.

As usual, cast these around rock, wood or weeds and watch that line.

like em david, mini bonefish flies.would be good for carp too i think.pretty snagless be good in the rip rap.

Yes, Jim that's what they are. The "Crazy Charlie" platform these are derived from is just that, a bonefish/permit fly.

As such, they can mimic anything from a shrimp to a leech, depending on colors, length of materials and hook.

I like to tie the eyes a bit closer to the center, too, so they glide on the wing more than jig up and down.

In about a size 6, tied in orange brown or pink, carp should go for them. There are many carp flies that bear an uncanny resemblance to these. Add a few dangly sili-legs and you have nailed it.

Snagless? You said "pretty" snagless and thats what they are. You can get away with a lot and not fear casting them wherever. If they DO get stuck, the light wire hooks are likely to bend free. Straighten them up, dress the point and go again. If you cant retrieve them and you break off, well... they take about 2 minutes to tie and cost about $0.15!

Ive never tried them as a point fly, but I may this season. One of these in #8 or #10 at the end dredging the bottom, and a #14 soft hackle on a 16" lead from the leader knot or tippet ring.

No Mike, glue doesn't hold them on. Its only thread.

A length of bead chain is held in your left hand and you straddle the hook shank with the last two - one on each side. Then, you secure them with a few wraps of thread and clip them off with diagonal pliers. The chain falls away and the last two links are on the hook!
This way they are much easier to attach than in loose pairs.

Once they are on, you wrap over the interconnecting wire wire in tight figure 8 wraps. Back and forth, about ten wraps are enough. Adjust them a little as you wrap, so they are evenly balanced on the hook shank.

Some people do add super glue after the thread wraps. But I just give them a drop of head cement. But you don't really need it.

The head is dubbed with any fuzzy dubbing, in this case wool, Some people use ultra chenille, too. I like wool or yarn. This way they look like they are part of the head.

So I looked at your flies a lil closer this time and was wondering how the eyes are attached. I don't see thread in them so I am assuming they are glued?

Yeah do it. They're so easy to tie, it's crazy not to give em a shot.
My first ever were tied using yarn from the carpet, fur from the dog and bead eyes from the bedroom fan.
And they caught fish.

And if they hang up or get snagged, you don't feel bad for losing them.

Thanks Dick - they're just little things. No real skill required.
But the fish like them.
