I'm with you Tony. I fish when I can, not when the time is perfect. I get stumped a lot for it, too. Which is why I bring a chair. Its not unusual to overhear people saying something like this:

Little kid - "Daddy, why is that man sitting out there by the water? It is cold and the rain has started again."

Dad- "Well, the crazy old boob seems to be fishing. Someone should tell him that fishing is for summertime.""

I hear ya Tony and no matter what direction the winds blowin'from fish still gotta eat.I still think wind direction is a great indicator where fish hold .It's proven it's effect on my catch rates too many times not to consider.

I like reading about other anglers' and their take on what they believe to be a good time to fish. I find it quite interesting, as I don't have much to offer in that regard. I have noticed a correlation between atmospheric pressure (barometer readings) and the fishes willingness to co-operate or not, but this is hardly a new revelation. I would think the wind direction could be a excellent indicator of an approaching weather system, hence the change in air pressure. At least it makes sense to me.

On the other hand, if I waited until the wind was right, or the moon was in a particular phase, or the foliage on the trees was so-so, AND tried to reconcile all those things within a time frame that I had available to fish, I might not ever wet a line.

I consider the best time to catch BG is whenever I have the chance. Certainly they are more easily taken at certain times, and under certain conditions than others, but I've never caught one while sitting at home waiting for the moon, or the wind, or the trees, to give me the green light to fish. And while the fine folks at BBG may have their personal preferences, ( I hate to fish when the wind is blowing 40 mph+, from ANY direction), I'll bet most people here are a lot like me....they fish when they can, and they make their own luck.

After all....if you try and get skunked, you can always blame the weather once you get home!

Yes ,I recite that every day I go fishing while noting wind direction .Degree of Sunlight is the 2nd thing I start thinking about as to the holding depth and range of fish striking zone .Not that water temp isn't important too.

I always recalled it as: Delete Comment

The Fishermans Wind Primer:

"Wind from the North, farther off

Wind from the South, hook in the mouth.

Wind from the East, fish bite the least.

Wind from the West, fishing is best."

The Fishermans Wind Primer:

"Wind from the North, do not go forth.

Wind from the South, blows bait in fishes mouth.

Wind from the East, fish bite the least.

Wind from the West, fishing is best."

Approaching from this direction the fish inevitably swam toward deeper water which my boat was in . I lost more jigs, spoons than usual because of their tightness to cover on this outing even lost a crankbait after catching a few small Bass .I gamble sometimes with my gear and lost pretty severely this time .It would  have been unaproachable perhaps if fishing from shore .I did retreive several hangups but I had to let lures sink farther into the snags to score fish.It is the way it goes on a late afternoon into dusk like this with a South wind and Bright Blue skies and an obvious boat fisherman predator. Several Crappies, a few Gills , A few Bass and a few Yellow Perch .No White Perch again!

Pretty fish and my kind of beer, too. Being boatless, Im not sure how to get the fish to bite in the shallows - but Im gonna keep trying.
