Well Sharon I really dont know how to answer that other than, Pumpkinseeds are more colorfull than a redear with bright orange bellies and turquoise. They are tiny at a world record 1.9 lbs compared to a 5lb redear which is mainly light green and yellow. Redears petoral fins extend to or beyond the dorsal fin base pumpkinseed pectoral fin doesn't extent to the dorsal fin base thats what a comparison of the two says, but I cant see the difference in the fins.  Maybe a Bigbluegill expert can explain the fins.

What makes this fish a pumpkinseed and not a redear?
