Yes David, heavy is right .  The prototype of the Ugly Stick? Ha ha! Gotta get me one of these in honor of my deceased father who ran a sporting good store in the late 50's /early 60's.He taught me to cast with this model Johnson :

Ha ha Jim playing  music on Guitar  is the Fountain of Youth .Les Paul and Segovia knew that ! Thanks for your kind words regarding my guitar playing . My electric playing  ,(1966 Strat ) is relegated to overdubs for recording and has taken very much a back seat to my acoustic efforts these days.

Yup this would be a heavy combo John , but a good one to teach the grandkids on ......... Leo needs some of these for his gang to use, he says they are hard on equipment !

HEY JOHN , I think Jim is about right on the age of that 202 . YUP SIR JIM I remember the old Johnson reels well and had a little knob on the top for the drag I believe. The Ace Hardware store I hung out at as a kid had a big display of the Johnson's and they sold lots of em back then. They were just like the Zebco's almost indestructable and were a mainstay for years . I see lots of em for sale on Ebay and the old Zebco's too for that matter..........

We might be old, John...but you rock! You are one of the best acoustic guitarist I have ever heard and I am at least 'highly average' with the electric axe in my church band.

The fact that we are old geezers who catch bluegills is just a bonus!

The first reels I recall are a Johnson spin cast and a weird model Abu Garcia or Mitchell spinning reel .Those were my Fathers and brothers and I used them .

Thanks Jim, and oh that makes you one year older than me .

I think the other 'classic' push-button reel of the day was the Johnson Century. Any body 'member that one?

Comment by Jim Gronaw on September 3, 2013 at 8:01pm

John...he is about right. I can 'member them when I was 10, which would have been 1962. But I think they were out even a few years before that.
