He ate flakes, minnows, shrimp, whatever I offered. A couple longnose gar and they gorge themselves on minnows as well. The catfish are a channel and a bullhead. The channel's about 14", bullhead about 12".

So what did you feed him while in the tank?

Did you say you had a gar in the tank now, what type is it and what does it like to eat?

What type of catfhis you have now and how big is it?

I was fishing for crappie UL gear when this guy hit my small spinner. Fight took a while and the drum went airborne three times.

He got a bit too large for my 150 gallon aquarium so I let him go in the same water I caught him from. Since then I have caught quite a few more and they are one of my favorite fish. Turns out they are very good to eat. They fight incredibly, better than a LMB of the same size. They hit nearly any lure you throw at them so I tend to catch them while targeting other fish. Basically, they are exactly what a sport fish is supposed to be. I suppose it's their look, their downward facing mouth, that turns people off and makes them assume they're trash fish. Still looking forward to your experiment Zach! Bruce, I never did check for the otolith while cleaning them. Totally forgot. Was more focused on cleaning them correctly. Anyway, if I catch a smaller drum I might toss him in the tank along with the gar and catfish I got in there now.

Do you still have the drum in your tank?

I didn't know if he was good to eat or not so I brought him home and got him in a tank. Since reading, I don't think I want to fillet him...and I don't think I can now that I've come to 'know' him. :D Pretty cool about the otoliths. I'll have to check that out...but I don't have a dental drill, just a Craftsman. ;)

If you filet a drum, it's very easy to recover the "otolith" out of the side of the skull. They make great jewelry. I've heard them called Indian Pearls. One time we caught about 20 of these fellas, and we saved the otoliths and made a necklace. It helps to have a dental drill handy. :-)

I did. Haha. Nobody saw me because I was in this far away neck of this lake...which is also why I had to run to get to my car. :D I was so relieved that he was still very much alive when I put him in a bucket of water. Made the weirdest noises too.

I caught him at dusk, it was just getting dark. However I had to jog a ways to get to my car to get the camera (didn't have it on me when I caught him). Put up a great fight on a light rod. Especially since I wasn't prepared for it. :D
