nice muddler! I'll have to try out that super slow retrieve!!
ps.
On top, this fly must sit at a 45 degree angle to work good for me. I have seen patterns with way too much 'wing' that causes the entire pattern to sit flush in the surface film. I want the deer hair head to be the only visible portion (above the water) of the fly. I always fish it as a struggling minnow (on the surface) with very little motion. Not like a popper. I often steer the pattern through vegetation and I can spend up to 2 or 3 minutes to bring the pattern in on a 30 foot cast.
Thanks for the comments yall. I have fished muddler style patterns for almost 45 years. Top middle and bottom of the water, they work for me. A marabou muddler was my most successful pattern for years on the big trout waters of Monatna and Alberta.
Yes Allen, the body is Estaz on this one. I also add some krystal flash to the wing at times. Amazing the variations one can add to this fly.
Nice Muddler. Is that Estaz for the underbody?
I've tied, and fished, a bunch of Muddlers. Primarily in still water. To me, it's just like bass fishing. Put the fly close to obvious (or not-so-obvious) ambush cover. If there is a fish there, it should hit the Muddler.
Your deerhair work looks very good Michael.
nice job
beautitful-always been one of my favorite flies to look at,dont have too much luck fishing em tho.dont fish much moving water.have tied some hair head poppers but the effort versus the destruction the gills do i use foam.cheap easy and dont care if i leave half a dozen in the bushes.down the road maybe you can swap me a couple for something as i collect flies and would love to have a couple for inspiration
NICE!!!! you and Allan Morgan make some nice muddlers!!
