Last season, I was out early and was about ready to leave a morning of fishing, when I was joined on the bank by a latecomer. He was a nice young guy, when he spoke. But, he spent most of his time getting his ear chewed off by his girlfriend... Cellphones are both a boon and a bane!

I was using a tele-pole to dip a micro-float and worm around shallow shrubbery, weeds and downed timber. He was casting a weighted cork out as far as his arm could manage.

I was steady pulling in the fish, while he got nothing but an electronic earful. Several of my catches were hefty shellcrackers, always nice to see when fishing from shore. I don't think he was mad at me, but more curious to know what I was doing. When I showed him, I got the usual 'glassy eye' - he had nothing in his tackle box even remotely like my finesse set up.

Like I said, I was about ready to leave when he arrived. Soon, it came time for to go, so I asked him if he wanted my fish. I usually cull as I go, anyway, and had just enough bigguns to bother with cleaning. BUT, I didn't feel like cleaning fish that day and offered them to him. They were live on my stringer, so I carefully unhooked each one and slipped them into his bucket.

He thanked me each time a fish went in his bucket and finally hung up on his girlfriend to thank me again.

The way I see it, I did him TWO favors that day.
