This is pretty much how I make mine. I use copper wire, generally, instead of thread. Also, I'll not shy away from modern convenience by using super glue and some white poly paint.
But this sums it up.
The base of the float has a wire tucked up into the quill, wrapped with line to close the end and keep the wire in - fine workmanship absent from our plastic-molded, mass-produced stuff on the shelf that is often off center and bad for casting, catching. I wish I could walk to the dime store and buy a couple of these! That wire loop is better than any slip float - nice line-sliding space there!
