awesome reel carl!! i have a couple of these reels on my ice rods, and even in minus 20 degree temps the drag preforms flawless! i use flouro and mono on my reels, i tried braid but in these temps it becomes a stiff rope.
Carl the motto with braid is "if you hook it you own it". Snags are tough to break loose. I usually end up straightening the hook or pulling the snag up. I once pulled a christmas tree up onto the bank with 10 lb braid.
guess I just love the mono stuff guys!! haven't really had a line to break with a big one in years;.. its going to be fun comparing the quantum to the president . I have had the quantum reel for over 4 years impressed with it.. now for the president!! COME ON SPRING!!!
Carl, just do what I do! Use a mono or Fluoro leader. Make sure the leader is a lower lbs test rating than than your braid. If you get hung up, the leader will break before the braid does. I've been using braid for years, and can count the number of times I've broken braid on my fingers, with change.
Hard beating these reels for the price. I've got three of them now and haven't had any problems whatsoever with them. Smooth drag system and smooth reeling. Have fun with it.
thanks for all the replies !! I have tried the braid stuff before;; down side of it is if you get hung up and HAVE to break the line-- its not easy!!
thanks for the tip Ken
your right john ... ive been in manufacturing all my working life cost savings are key... it comes down to this.... hardly anyone will ever use the feature on the spool because braid is so thin it would require to many yards to fill... lay down a cheap monofilament backing braid doesnt slip anymore. all of my setups are braid and not one setup does braid ever touch the bottom of the spool.
this has gotta add cost to the reel but worth it in some cases I 'm thinking .I have still never used braid
