Great gill Jeff. I've noticed that lakes with good shad populations will have gills that target them. I fish one like that here in PA. I've caught lots of gills on minnows while crappie fishing. Seems like it only happens on that lake. The other thing, Take some pix of the lake while it is down, maybe even get some GPS numbers. You look like a young fellow, but the lake might not be that low for another 30 years. Pinpoint that cover while you can.

The sad thing is, is that they are lowering down the water level to work on the dam to reinforce it against earthquakes. Perris is fairly small to begin with and currently it is about half it's full capacity size. Most all of the underwater structure of rocks and trees and brush is high and dry now. With drought conditions here in this state, we don't know when the lake will get back up to it's original size. And John, as far as to what they eat here, it is probably Threadfin Shad and freshwater clams, and small crawdads, because the lake is full of this forage. A lot of the large Bluegills are caught by bass fishermen on small deep diving crankbaits...this is why I think that the trophy 'Gills are eating little shad.

I 've never come close to a gill like that here in NJ and I read in the New Jersey 2009 Digest that the NJ record 3 Lb. Bluegill was caught in 1990 in a pond. The record 1 Lb. 8 oz.Sunfish/pumpkinseed was was also caughtin 1987 in a pond.

Wow! Lifetime trophy bluegill!

I see that several biiiiig bluegills from Calfornia in this website that made me wondered....... what they eat?
That make bluegills grow big! Even bigger than in Florida!
We know that monster bass in Calfornia eat rainbow trout but what bluegills eat?
